The royals

It is amazing, as a foreigner, to understand how big the Royal presence is in people's imagery. Not only as a symbol, but also as a nemesis. What is impressive is that the show always goes on. No matter whether it's a tragedy, a comedy or a romance. This free exhibition at Hayward tells a story, which is not just another story about the House of Windsor. Much better. It's a story of the stories about them. There's everything, from the media's craving for hot pictures to conspiracy theories and from the demystification of the Queen to the Chronicles of a death foretold of princess Diana. If the single pieces might be taken for the usual satirical stuff about the Family, altogether the exhibition is great!
Brilliant Alison Jackson's picture of the couple of the moment, I'd say my second favourite after the dishwashing Queen. It's just so true. Not the picture (eventhough...) of course, but the royal fame monster. I think it raises so many questions about the psychotic nature of our society. We build celebrities, and then indeed we need to destroy them. We make of them something special, lift them above our heads and give them a much better life than ours. All this just in order to have someone to adore/hate/envy. And then, after building the myth around them and forcing ourselves to believe that we didn't do it, it just happened, we feel the need to destroy it. The need to bring them down, to feel that in the end they are not better than we are. What a waste of time and money for a wank.
My dad used to tell me: "when someone makes you feel like they are better than you, remember that they fart just like anyone else".
